Chad Gaffield returned to the University of Ottawa on September 1, 2014 after stepping down as President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada where he had served since 2006. As Professor of History and University Research Chair in Digital Scholarship, Dr. Gaffield focuses on Canada’s socio-cultural history. He was President of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (1996-8) and the Canadian Historical Association (2000-2001). Dr. Gaffield is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, where he recently chaired the working group that created the College of New Scholars in the Arts and Sciences. The University of Ottawa named him Researcher of the Year in 1995 and Professor of the Year in 2002, marking only the second time that a professor has been chosen for both awards. Dr. Gaffield has also received awards such as the Prix de la francophonie, the J.B. Tyrrell Historical Medal and the Antonio Zampolli Prize from the international Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations. In 2007, the Canadian Association of University Teachers presented him with its Distinguished Academic Award in recognition of excellence in teaching, research and service to the community. Dr. Gaffield was presented with both the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal (2003) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012). Dr. Gaffield holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (OISE) with a MA and BA in History (Honours) from McGill University.
